Who Is The Real G.O.A.T.

I can’t lie…the GOAT narrative always leaves me feeling frustrated.  Who is the real GOAT?  You know it right?   Greatest Of All Time.  It is a debate that comes from the enemy.  It is not healthy and it in fact undermines the perfect creativity of God himself who designed every human.

In the Scriptures, Jesus’ followers were arguing about which of them was the greatest.  Jesus is listening in on the conversation and finally chimes in.  He says, If want the place of honor…if you want to be great…you must become a slave and serve others.  If you want to be ‘great’ in my kingdom, you need to be a servant of all.

Jesus says, ‘my power is made perfect in weakness’.  ‘When I am weak, He is made strong.’  ‘Greater is He that is in me, than he that is in the world.’  Greatness is ‘apart’ from me, but can ‘live in me.’

The truth is for those who call themselves believers, we are not goats, we are sheep.  On that final day Jesus will separate the sheep (true believers) from the goats (unbelievers).  And according to Scriptures, we were once all goats.

Sheep and Goats are similar in many ways.   Neither are so bright!   They both need a shepherd.  Isaiah says, ‘all we like sheep have gone astray, each of us has turned to our own way.’  We are prone to get lost.  We find it ‘funny’ to talk about who is the G.O.A.T.  But ‘goat talk’ is unhealthy.

According to Matthew the ‘sheep’ (those who choose to follow Jesus and His way) will sit on the right hand of the Father.  The goats (the hard-hearted non-followers) will be cast into eternal damnation.  The question therefore is not ‘who is the greatest?’   The question is, ‘will I choose to follow’ the Greatest?

The greatest…the real G.O.A.T. is neither a goat or a sheep, The greatest is the ‘spotless lamb of God’ who came into the world to live among us and to model servant leadership…but the true identity of the Great One, is that He stands ALONE as the LION Of Judah.  JESUS is the G.O.A.T.

We must keep our eyes on Jesus…the author and finisher of our faith.  We must take our eyes off of the so called ‘fame’ of our world.  The ‘starts ‘ of this world,… movie stars…athletic stars…music stars…business stars, all have a short lived stardom.

Jesus is the bright and ‘morning star.’  He is the true light and when we choose to believe in Him, he shares his light with us.  He breathes His life into us and gives us real life.  Our worth and life only comes from Jesus.  Apart from Him, we can do nothing.   But, when we choose to follow Jesus, He shares His greatness with His followers.  We know this because He tells us so.  Jesus said, ‘Greater things will you do ‘in my name’.  Not in our name…not in our strength but in and under the name of Jesus.

So let’s STOP ‘comparing.’   Jesus did not come to this world to compete, but to complete.  Our value and identity is found in the person of Jesus.  Our ‘worth’…our ‘greatness’ only comes when we humble ourselves and recognize our weakness and ask for Jesus to give us his breath and life.  When we choose the path of Jesus, he makes us strong.

Who is GOAT?  Michael Jordan or Lebron James?  Lionel Messi or Christiano Ronaldo?  Steven Furtick, Andy Stanley, Rick Warren, Craig Groeshel or the small town Pastor?

The answer?  None of them!  There is ONE true G.O.A.T. and His name is Jesus.

So STOP the nonsense and childish arguments and banter.  Every ‘human’ star has strength.  No is the best all around.  Every person and era is significantly different.  The question is will you pursue excellence in all that you do?  Excellence is simply ‘doing the best the we can, with the resources we have to the 100% glory of God.

G.O.A.T. talk is not healthy and it sends a message of confusion when we connect this narrative to humanity.  God made each of us…”YOU” with great purpose and design.  He fashioned you and made you unique and in His image and likeness.

You are LOVED and you are VALUED.  There will never be another one just like you.  You be you!   STOP trying to compare and be like someone else.  Jesus, your creator made you exactly like he wanted you.

You will never be a LION.  You are a ‘sheep.’

In fact, the last thing you want to be is a goat.  Goats represent the hard-hearted people who choose not to follow in the ways of Jesus.  Jesus’ followers… His sheep listen to His voice and the GREAT Shepherd hears them and He knows them by name.  Jesus, knows your name!  You have great worth.

Do you know the Great Shepherd?  Have you chosen to follow Him?  Quit trying to be the g.o.a.t.   For me… “I just wanna be a sheep…bah, bah, bah, bah.”
