The ‘quality’ of leadership.

  • According to the apostle Paul in Scripture, leaders should be above reproach, caring, not quarrelsome, not greedy, and capable of teaching God’s word (1 Tim. 3:1-7).
  • According to the leadership gurus of today, leaders should be witty, winsome, tech-savvy, culturally attuned, therapeutically inclined, masterful vision-casters, wonderful team-builders, and fearless in the face of conflict.

The modern expectations for leader are overwhelming.   Let’s keep it simple.

Five things anyone can do to care for the people we serve and supervise.

  1. You can pray for them.
  2. You can encourage and celebrate your team when they win and even when they make an effort or attempt.
  3. You can ask people questions about their lives. Your presence matters. Listen more. God gave you 2 ears and 1 mouth, therefore, double your listening. Cultivate an environment of trust and transparency.
  4. You can serve your team by caring for their needs. People don’t care how much you know until they know how much your care.
  5. You can continue to grow as a servant leader.  Practice ‘humble-confidence.’  (be a life-long learner) – invest in your team.  Be a river not a reservoir.  Pass on to your team what you are learning.
